Our Services

Nothing tastes better than your own home-grown organic fruits and vegetables!

Growing a small portion of your own food will allow you to take control of the ingredients you eat and feed to others.  A few square feet of soil outside your door can yield not just herbs and tomatoes, but a daily reminder that eating is an ecological act; and sharing that food with others is the ultimate reward.

Garden Coaching

The more you learn, the more you know and will be able to make informed decisions from topics such as what crops grow well together and what season/conditions vegetables thrive.

Garden Coaching is a 1-on-1 virtual or in person session, where you get to:

  • Learn gardening tips and tricks.

  • Ask gardening questions specific to your garden.

  • Learn in a garden-along style

  • Choose the topic of your session.

Hourly rate applies for coaching sessions. A typical coaching session is about 2 hours.

You can choose a private session or have a small group session of maximum 3 people for the same hourly rate.

Garden Coaching sessions are customizable, including but not limited to the following topics:

  • Seeds - Exploring a wider range of seeds beyond what's available locally can enrich your garden by introducing diversity and new flavors to your harvest.  Specialized companies offer a vast selection of heirloom and unique varieties that can be purchased through catalogs or online, expanding your growing knowledge and palate.

  • Soil amendment - Fertile soil equals healthy plants, equals more harvest!

  • Organic pest management - Encourage pollinator visits to the garden while also managing and discouraging pests that need to go elsewhere.

  • Caring and pruning plants - Removing dead, diseased, or damaged leaves with clean tools.  Encouraging plant growth by snipping lower leaves to help focus plant energy.

  • Planting calendar - Direct sowing or transplanting seedlings is a “timing effort” to ensure viability of plant growth success.

  • Planting zones - Geographical location and planting with the seasons.

  • Harvesting - Homegrown fresh food brought to the table or for food preservation.

  • Drip irrigation - automate, save water, save money and convenience! It is part of stress free gardening.

*Drip irrigation is not optional in a Tidewater Kitchen Garden design. Consistent watering is crucial to the success of a garden. If there is no automatic drip system installed yet, we can help you set it up as a separate project.

If you have questions that we don’t readily have the answer to, we will get back to you within a week with the answer or solution. In short, we got you ;)

Garden Maintenance

Maintenance Tasks are customizable, including but not limited to the following topics:

  • Weeds - Pulling unwanted weeds - ensures valuable nutrients are going to the plants we are purposefully growing and prevents weed propagation.

  • Watering - Too little or too much?  Unless we are harvesting and storing rainwater, adding drip irrigation is a valuable resource to our kitchen garden hydration requirements. - Adequate moisture is crucial, especially for seedlings and in the warmest seasons of the year.

    • Technique: Water deeply and less frequently will encourage strong, deep root systems. Water in the morning will allow foliage to dry before sunset, which helps prevent disease.

  • Mulching - Aids in suppressing weeds, maintaining soil moisture, and regulating soil temperature.

  • Fertilizing - Feed your plants regularly with organic matter like compost, especially since nutrients are continuously being removed during harvest.

    • Adding rich organic materials.  Nutrient rich compost and slow-release organic fertilizers will enhance a “living” soil ecosystem which encourages plant growth that is more resistant to pests and disease.

  • Pruning & Harvesting - Regular pruning and harvesting are vital for a kitchen garden to remain productive.

Tidewater Kitchen Garden wants to make sure your garden is healthy and productive.  Your consultant will work with you to establish a recommended gardening routine.  This will include pruning, thinning, seeding, transplanting, planting plans, fertilizing, pest management, watering schedule, and vermicomposting.
